European Ceremony Customs

While traditional German wedding customs do not include these activities, most American newlyweds perhaps had time-honoured proposal parties, bridal showers, and bachelor/bachelorette parties. This does not mean that Europeans are starting to combine some of these entertaining and well-known customs, but more that they do so in their own unique way.

For instance, guests will insert a piece of bread into the Coupe de Marriage, also known as the bride bowl or cooking glass, during a French marriage ceremony. We get the phrase” to toast” from this custom, which literally means to lift a crystal to the partners! The French also provide a tower of creme-filled cake sips as their snack, the croquembouche.

It is typical for family and friends to carry a krevati three days before the wedding in the southern countryside of France. Families and friends may visit the handful at their home and place their babies and cash on the pillow for fertility and happiness. The couple therefore transports this gift collection with them to their greeting.

Without some amateur entertainment, a marriage is incomplete in Switzerland. The best male and maid of honor did arrange a game schedule to make up the occasion between the afternoon appetizer and dining a few hours afterwards. In order to recognize or make fun of the couple, customers will dress up and perform plays or songs during this time. For instance, they might force the man to chop lumber or force him to knit a headscarf. The couple will also receive a present of green apples to send them good fortune in their upcoming together, in addition to these interesting activities.
